Dear Madam/Sir,

Please briefly describe your relationship to the candidate, and describe the circumstances under which you have known her or him.

Currently I am a Senior Economist at the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP). I joined the BCRP in 1983, and my career includes chief posts at the fiscal, economic information, and international departments, as well as appointments as Advisor at other Peruvian public sector organizations and the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It is my pleasure to recommend Mr. Roberto Cavalli for an admission to Stanford’s MBA Program. As Mr. Cavalli’s colleague at the BCRP, I have had the chance to interact with him professionally since he enrolled in 2009.

What (if any) lasting impact has this candidate left on your organization?

Regarding his career at the BCRP, I have noticed that Mr. Cavalli clearly stands out for his leadership talents, sense of responsibility, ability to adapt to the work environment, capacity to work under pressure, and desire to grow professionally. I know firsthand that his technical abilities, especially his solid command of economics, econometrics, and computing, have been instrumental in improving procedures at his unit.

I would like to underscore Mr. Cavalli’s excellent interpersonal skills. I have witnessed his ability to persuade and take on a leading role when he sees the need for innovation. At the same time, he is a good listener, always open to different views. His ability to use easy-to-grasp examples drawn from the real world, in addition to theory, makes him a convincing and effective communicator. Considering that he is also very proactive and results-oriented, in my view he is one of the few among his age peers with true potential to move on in the future to occupy an important management post within the BCRP.

Is there anything else (positive or negative) we should know about the candidate?

Mr. Cavalli graduated first in his class at Universidad del Pacifico’s economics program, probably the best in Peru. To my best knowledge, he has considerable teaching skills: thanks to his good academic performance he is currently teaching assistant to some of Peru’s most prestigious economics teachers. In 2009 he was recruited by the BCRP after successfully completing the BCRP Summer Course in Economics. I am a 1983 Summer Course alumnus and have followed up on it ever since. Its academic standards have improved consistently and it has become increasingly competitive, thereby reinforcing its role as the BCRP’s main tool for recruiting outstanding young economists. It is Mr. Barrantes’ merit to have performed so well in such a challenging environment.

I am certain that Mr. Cavalli’s teachers and the senior BCRP officials who have a working relationship with him share the above opinions. I am convinced that he would perform outstandingly at the Stanford MBA Program.
